At a standard 1-inch setting bed, 1 ton of mason sand covers approximately 200 sq ft. A 400 sq ft patio needs about 2 tons; a 1,000 sq ft driveway apron needs about 5 tons. Always add a 15-20% buffer for screeding waste and minor depth variation. Use the calculator on this page with your exact dimensions to confirm.
Yes. Our mason sand is the standard masonry grade, properly sized and clean of organics for mortar use. If your project requires a specific written spec, call 844-764-5726 before ordering so we can confirm the source meets it.
We deliver mason sand by bulk dump truck across Florida, including Tampa, Orlando, Lakeland, St. Petersburg, Miami, and surrounding areas. Enter your ZIP for a delivered price that includes the material and the truck. Order by 2 PM ET Monday through Friday for next-business-day delivery.
Yes. Mason sand is the most common base material for above-ground pool installations. Its fine, uniform particles create a smooth, cushioned bed that protects the liner from punctures. Most manufacturers specify 1-2 inches of leveled, screened sand. For a standard 24-foot round pool at 2 inches depth, plan on about 4 tons for a flat base, or about 5 tons if your installer is building a sand cove (the perimeter berm inside the wall) instead of using a foam cove. Always cross-check depth and quantity against your pool manufacturer's installation guide.
Screed the setting bed to a uniform 1 inch thick over a properly compacted aggregate base. Avoid going thicker than 1.5 inches, deeper beds continue settling for months and can lead to uneven pavers over time. The compacted aggregate base below is what carries the load; the sand only fine-levels the surface.
Mason sand is the thin setting bed (typically 1 inch) that goes directly under the pavers, but you still need a compacted aggregate base of 4-6 inches for pedestrian patios and 6-8 inches for driveways, especially in Florida sandy soils. Pavers on sand alone over sandy soil will sink within a season. For a complete project, order mason sand for the top setting layer and recycled concrete screenings or limerock for the base.
Mason sand is a fine, washed sand screened to remove rocks and debris, with very little clay or silt mixed in, which makes it smooth, consistent, and easy to work with. It's the go-to sand for mortar mixes, paver bedding, stucco work, and pool surrounds. Sold by the ton and delivered across Florida by dump truck. As a rule of thumb, one ton spreads about 100 square feet at 2 inches deep.
Mason sand has five main uses: mixing mortar for brick, block, and stone work; bedding pavers and flagstone; mixing stucco and plaster; building pool surrounds; and tuckpointing or repairing mortar joints. It's chosen for these jobs because the fine, washed grains create a smooth, workable mix and a tight, level bedding surface. It is not meant for structural concrete, high-drainage French drains, or as a wear surface on driveways.
The driver drops your mason sand in a single pile at the most accessible point on your property, usually the end of the driveway, but it can be a side yard or back area if the truck can safely reach it. The material is dumped, not spread. Before delivery day, clear the drop zone of cars, bins, low branches, and anything else in the truck's path. Someone must be available on site to receive the delivery.
One ton of mason sand equals roughly 0.83 cubic yards, and one cubic yard weighs about 1.2 tons. So if a project spec calls for 5 cubic yards, order about 6 tons (5 x 1.2). If it calls for 5 tons, that's roughly 4.15 cubic yards. Use our materials calculator on this page for an instant estimate on any project size.
Yes, for now. Our mason sand is washed, screened, and low in clay and silt, so it works well for residential sandboxes when you want a clean, consistent fill. We have a dedicated, finer-grained play sand product launching soon — when White Play Sand goes live, we'll point families there for the smoothest, brightest play surface. In the meantime, mason sand is the right call for sandbox and play-area use; just rinse the surface with a hose after filling to settle any residual dust before kids dig in.
Mason sand (also called mortar sand or masonry sand) is a finely graded construction sand meeting ASTM C144. Grain sizes run 0.1 to 0.5 mm. It's washed and screened to strip out clay, silt, and organic material, leaving a clean, consistent sand for mortar, plaster, and paver bedding.
The fine, uniform grain is what makes it easy to work with. It blends into mortar with cement and lime without clumping. Screed it as a paver setting bed and it levels fast and compacts just enough to hold stones in place. It's low dust and non-toxic, which is why parents and installers use it for kids' sandboxes. Because it meets ASTM C144, you get the same sand load after load.
Main uses: brick and block mortar, flagstone and paver setting beds, stucco and exterior plaster, tuckpointing, above-ground pool surrounds, and kids' play areas. Common on both residential and commercial jobs.
On coverage, one ton covers about 100 sq ft at 2 inches deep, or about 200 sq ft at 1 inch. A 400 sq ft patio on a 1" setting bed runs 2 to 3 tons with a 20-30% buffer for screed waste and depth variation. Use the calculator on this page for a precise number based on your dimensions.
